”My Story”

SHARING STORIES, TRANSFORMING LIVES

Kisati, the next phase of Through The Checkpoint, means “my story” in Arabic and is a 6-month storytelling and illustration workshop to help children in Bethlehem process their experiences and emotions from COVID-19 quarantine and lockdown. Kisati is being hosted by Diyar Academy for Children and Youth in Bethlehem, in partnership with Life Illuminated, and in cooperation with the Creative Visions Foundation.

THE DETAILS

Who: 12 Palestinian children, ages 13-16, from Bethlehem and Aida, Dheisheh, and Beit Jibrin (al-Azza) refugee camps.
What: A storytelling and illustration workshop.
Why: To help children move from silence to expression by processing their experiences about COVID-19 through storytelling.
Where: Diyar Academy for Children and Youth; online if necessary.
When: July-December, 2020
How: 

  • 6 months, 48 workshops, 3 Phases (2 months, 8 sessions each)

    • Phase 1: Children will be nurtured through a process of opening up and engaging with their difficult experiences over the last few months. They will discover how to release and express what is within.

    • Phase 2: Building on Phase 1, children will learn how to express themselves on paper, developing storytelling skills and writing techniques.

    • Phase 3: Children will learn will bring their illustrations and storyline together into book form.

  • Budget: $6,600

    • Salary of Coordinator: 300 USD * 6 Months = 1800 USD

    • 2 teachers (for storytelling and illustration) * 250 USD * 6 Months = 3000 USD

    • Art Supplies = 800 USD

    • Design shop costs: 500 USD

    • Transportation (on individual need basis) 500 USD

Output: Published e-book for each child.

Outcome: Transformed challenges and life experiences of children in Bethlehem. Financial support of economy.

Impact: Empowered youth.  Inspired community.
